A Magical Musical Experience
What better way for a music lover to spend a weekend than getting up close and personal with three international New Zealand opera stars, surrounded by the beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound at Bay of Many Coves. This is guaranteed to be a soul stirring and magical experience from the moment you arrive to music and cocktails on the jetty, until you leave with a lilting aria to inspire your journey home.
Enjoy a sumptuous Friday night dinner accompanied by wonderful musical highlights from our guest opera stars. Saturday promises something even more special as Executive Chef, Hannes Bareiter, serves a traditional long Italian lunch with matching wines. Soul-stirring gastronomy to say the least and a wonderful romantic weekend for those who truly enjoy the finer things in life.
Opera at the Bay will appeal not just to opera buffs but also to those who would love to be introduced to opera in the perfect setting at Bay of Many Coves. The weekend will turn back the clock to a time when food and wine were an integral part of celebrating the latest Verdi or Puccini masterpiece.
The Opera Programme
The programme will include one of the most famous soprano arias of all time - O mio babbino caro from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi - where the heroine implores her father to let her marry. Other famous arias will include Deh vieni from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Una voce poca fa from Rossini’s Barber of Seville and the dramatic Di Provenza il mar from La Traviata by Verdi.
Among the duets are Sull’aria from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Rossini’s hugely entertaining Cat Duet, the romantic Love Unspoken from Franz Lehar’s operetta, The Merry Widow and, one of the most haunting of all operatic compositions, the trio Soave Sia Il Vento from Cosi Fan Tutte by Mozart. The soloists also identify in song with the luxury resort. The famous Lakme duet describes nature at its most glorious while Ombra Mai Fu by Handel pays tribute to a tree.
Opera was the music of the day and the soloists also present two contemporary numbers which are the music of the moment – the Lloyd Webber duet All I Ask Of You and Jeanine Tesori’s brilliant Girl in 14G which includes a touch of Mozart’s Queen Of the Night.
The soloists will entertain both on the Friday night and during Saturday’s lunch, farewelling the guests from the balcony overlooking the wharf on Sunday.
